I listen to a lot of music when I drive. Some music makes a really good soundtrack.

Night time driving? Portishead - Dummy
Sunny Afternoon driving? Eagles - Greatest Hits
Rainy Afternoon driving? Radiohead - Kid A or Amnesiac

I can't drive, but I love forcing my girlfriend to take me out at night. Idiotheque, particularly, off of Kid A is amazing to cruise to. Sometimes I think about learning to drive just to subject my friends to my music tastes, but then I realise I'm not made of cash.

GA, where are you from? i'm in texas, and it you dont, you dont go anywhere. everything to so spread out. anyways, right after i bought KidA, i put it in my car's CD player. i remember is was a rainy day and the music just seemed to fit perfectly.
TS, i dont listen much to the Gorillaz, not cuz i think they're no good, just noy given much of a chance. i am familiar with the album though. seems like it would be a good choice.

It must be nice to just go out driving alone at night, when there is nothing for miles though mdklancia?

Explosions in the Sky or Jeff Buckley are perfect laid back driving artists in my opinion.

My car is only equipped with a rickety cassette player, so I often find myself digging out my old school time interests and having nostalgic drives to work accompanied by Blink 182, Midtown, The Offspring and Tchaikovsky.

the drives can be nice, right now it is so damn hot all the time (and my car has no A/C) i try to keep the driving to a minimum. but youre right there are some wide open spaces out here. blistering summers aside, i love where i live. just close enough to the city, but not so close that i have to even deal with much traffic. anyways...
most of my drive time music listening takes place on my way to work as well (about a 20 minute drive). i'm looking forward to an across-the-country vacation in october to visit relative, cuz it will give me a chance to listen to music on the road. i'm already getting some albums together

If I'm driving fast like on the interstate (and traffic doesn't suck): Remixed versions of Beautiful Day by U2, Desert Rose by Sting, Young Folks by Peter,Bjorn and John or some industrial music like Front 242 and Nitzer Ebb and the like.
If I'm just driving around 30 to 40mph then I'm listing to Chicago alt. rock band OK GO, Jesus Jones, 80's rap band Arrested Development, Stereo MCs, U2's Greatest Hits, Gorillaz or a compilation of the like.
During the winter I get a taste for classical music, world music and Christmas music (both old and new).

I'm only usually in the car when im on my way to karate, my mom or dad driving, as i dont have my permit yet.
The music we listen to in the car is Nickleback, Guns N Roses, Mettalica, or a mix tape, as the SUV's radio is broken, and those are the only songs we have on tape. SO bassically i know each of those songs by heart, and i find them quite enjoyable to listen too. =D

Tape? Tape? what decade is this again? That's TWO people that mentioned tapes. :)

I dont even use CDs anymore. Just USB memory stick and I have almost all my 5,000+ songs on it.

Cruising music i prefer is usually chillout or downtempo stuff, and I agree with above mentioned Gorilla: Demon Days, and Daft Punk: Homework. Great albums to listen to while driving.

I like to sing while I drive. :)

A few bands I've had looping in the car for weeks on end:

They Might Be Giants
The Ditty Bops
The Flaming Lips

I usually listen to something heavy if I'm trying to get somewhere in a hurry. Drop some Pantera in. Most of the time, though, its just Foo Fighters, Sublime, maybe Jurassic 5. Classic rock radio stations work fine too.

They're good to drive to.

Live Radiohead and Smashing Pumpkins CDs. Also, any new CD that happen to pick up that week. A 45 minute car ride is a perfect scenario for a first listen.

I agree with Radiohead. Some others I listen to are Ozzy and Jethro Tull. If I'm in the right mood, I've got a kickass Vladimir Horowitz CD. If I'm depressed, I'll listen to my Good Bye Lenin soundtrack.

I agree with The Postal Service as well, and Iron & Wine go into that category - they're both very relaxing, which is good, because I tend to get really pissed when I drive.

The Cars. Just kidding. Lately (well, during this morning's brutal rush hour) classical music seem to fit the bill and calm the nerves.
